摘要
This study presents an integrated approach to the management of glacial ecosystems and land use in mountainous regions, focusing on Azerbaijan's Greater Caucasus Mountains and Shahdag National Park. Firstly, it investigates the impacts of modern climate change on nival-glacial ecosystems, crucial freshwater sources, and river systems in the region. Using satellite imagery and GIS techniques, the research reveals a concerning trend of significant reduction and disappearance of permanent glacial areas on major mountain peaks over the years. This underscores the urgent need for proactive conservation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on these vulnerable ecosystems.
Secondly, the study proposes a conceptual framework for nature protection and land use planning within Shahdag National Park and its surrounding areas. This framework categorizes spatial development goals into protection, improvement, and development zones. The entire territory of the national park is designated as a protected zone, while areas suitable for development, such as forests and shrubs, are identified. Additionally, areas experiencing degradation are targeted for improvement efforts. The study further delineates eight distinct categories within the study area, ranging from core conservation areas to high mountain rock ecosystems, each offering specific socioeconomic opportunities.
By combining these approaches, this study offers a comprehensive strategy for managing mountainous landscapes in Azerbaijan. It highlights the importance of addressing climate change impacts on glacial ecosystems while implementing strategic land use planning and nature protection measures. This integrated approach aims to ensure the sustainability of these vital ecosystems and the well-being of local communities for generations to come.
